Artist’s Statement
My Quilt square is about the Compromise of 1850. There are two points of the Compromise on it. The states represent Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada becoming organized without slavery. The map below is of Washington D.C.. The slave poster that is crossed-out signifies the fact that the slave trade was abolished in that district. The four states mentioned above caused controversy; Congress was afraid the balance of slave and free states would be upset. The background writing is a portion the Compromise of 1850.
