Artist Statement by Blake/ Deborah

My topic is transportation during the civil war. I chose the black background because it represents those who lived in fear back in the civil war. The two solders in this quilt square are pulling at the train because they both want exclusive rights to have an advantage to use the new technology in the war. There is also a thought bubble with a train zooming across toward its destination. It was the fastest way to transport goods to and from far away places. Today, the railroad has created new jobs because of the population all around the US. As I mentioned, there are two solders, and there are also two flags. One is Confederate, one is Union.
