Coyle & Alex B. - 54th Regiment - Sarah's Class

The 54th  Massachusetts regiment of the civil war was made up of all African Americans. They were recruited by abolitionists in Massachusetts, and the regiment completely formed in March, 1863. They fought for the Union side. The goal of the regiment was to take over Fort Wagner, and even though they didn't reach that goal, it was a huge step in the civil war because it was the first all black regiment.
