Marley- artist statement- Deborah's class

this quilt is a scene of a slave and her children.  she appears to be slightly hidden behind the flag, but her children are in front of the flag.  the american flag has blood dripping from its stripes, and she is also bleeding.  she looks very sad, but her children look happy.  i think that this piece shows that back during the civil war, african americans did not have rights, but that now, they have alot more rights then they did in the 1800s.  this quilt also shows that slavery was a struggel in the united states.  it showes this with the bleeding stripes and the slave hidden behind the flag with her children in front.

  1. I really like how detailed you did it. It gave me different ways to think about that piece.
