Dred Scott was a African American, born as a slave. In 1847 he went in to trial to sue his owner John Emerson, and ten years later he lost the trial and stayed a slave.
They called him free than they reversed it. The decision took the nation close to the civil war.
When they were deciding if he should be able to sue Emerson or not one side wanted to make him a free man and the other wanted to keep him a slave and there became a big fight over that.
His owner John Emerson took him to a free state but he did not try to sue Emerson until he got back in to a slave state.
