Abraham Lincoln's election was one of the key elements that led to the long 4 year Civil War. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation which gave slaves freedom and the right to be a United States citizen. When people heard of this, the south was outraged and was very angry. This led to the Civil War which began in 1861 and lasted until 1865. Later on when the Civil War was coming to a close Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play.
