The Ku Klux Klan (also known as The KKK) was a well known hate group founded in Tennessee in 1865 by civil war confederate army veterans. They only believed in white nationalism and anti immigration. They terrorized and killed black people or african americans. They wore masks, robes, conical hats made out of sheets, cloth or anything they had to make them look terrifying and to hide their true identity. Some of them wore horns on their head as well. There were many people trying to stop them such as The Union, and later on the police. but it was hard for people to find them, but if they ever did find a member of The Ku Klux Klan they were punished and sometimes awarded with death, This all happened during The Reconstruction Period. The KKK existed in 3 periods of time. The first period was 1865-1870's, the second period was a longer time period and was 1915-1944, and finally the third period was since 1946. The first klan had a total population of 550,000 people. The second klan was 3 to 6 million people. In 1870's, the federal government passed "The Force Acts" which were used to prosecute The KKK. The first KKK ended in 1874.
